Philippians Study: Having a Real Relationship with Jesus
Part One: A New Purpose (Chapter 1)
Lesson 3: Philippians 1:27–30
Read the passage carefully several times.
- After reflecting on the purpose of his imprisonment, what does Paul now say to the Philippian Christians (27a)? See the footnote on the word “worthy”; what did it mean for them in Philippi to “behave as citizens worthy of the gospel,” and what does it mean for us today?
- What does Paul say is distinctive about this “worthy behavior” (27b–28a)? Why is such firm unity so important, and what does Paul add in verse 28b about their opponents?
- Read verse 29. In Greek, the word “granted” is related to the word “grace.” What does it mean that suffering for the sake of Christ is a grace granted us? Why do we need this conviction, and what does it mean to be “engaged in the same conflict” as Paul?
- In light of this study, what have you learned about having a real relationship with Christ? What behavior in your life needs to change? This week, what is one specific thing you can do differently?
