OVERVIEW

Zechariah 1–3 reveals God's passionate jealousy for His people—a holy, covenant love that moves Him to act on their behalf. Though the returned exiles had begun rebuilding the temple, God first called them to return to Him personally, desiring their hearts rather than merely their service. Through a series of visions, God showed that because He is exceedingly jealous for Jerusalem and Zion, He watches over His people, defends them from their enemies, restores and rebuilds them with mercy, and ultimately purifies them. The cleansing of Joshua the high priest points forward to Jesus Christ, the promised Branch, who would remove sin once for all through His sacrifice. These chapters assure believers that God zealously loves, protects, restores, and sanctifies His people, calling them to draw near to Him and share His heart for others.
