OVERVIEW

Zechariah 4–6 teaches that God’s work cannot be accomplished by human strength, talent, or power, but only by the Holy Spirit. Through the vision of the golden lampstand and olive trees, God encouraged Zerubbabel that the temple would be completed by His Spirit, even when the work seemed small, weak, and impossible. The visions of the flying scroll and the woman in the basket show that God also cares about the purity of His people and removes wickedness from among them. Finally, the vision of the four chariots and the crowning of Joshua point to God’s final victory and to Jesus Christ, the promised Branch, who is both King and High Priest. This passage calls spiritual leaders to depend on the Holy Spirit, pursue holiness, rest in God’s victory, and fix their eyes on Jesus, the true and eternal Leader.
